All About the RCVO

What is the Resource Centre for Voluntary Organizations (RCVO)?

The RCVO is the information destination for Alberta’s nonprofit sector. Since 1987, thousands of individuals and nonprofit organizations have come to us for information, support, advice and tools to better meet the challenges they face. Unique to Alberta, the RCVO provides information and resources related to:

  • nonprofit organization management

  • voluntary sector leadership

  • fund development

  • volunteer program management

  • board leadership and governance

  • voluntary sector issues

History

In 1985 The Junior League of Edmonton saw a need to supply fundraising information to many of the 50,000 voluntary organizations serving community needs throughout Alberta. They partnered with Grant MacEwan University and The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (now Imagine Canada) in developing The Fundraising Resource Centre. In 1988 the Centre became known as the Resource Centre for Voluntary Organizations to reflect an expanded mandate to include information on non-profit agency management, volunteer management and board development. The RCVO has acted as the secretariat for the Alberta Association of Fundraising Executives (AAFRE).

Our Supporters

Grant MacEwan University

For nearly 20 years, the RCVO evolved under the auspices of the Voluntary Sector Management Program (which concluded in 2006), sharing office space, administrative support, infrastructure and, most importantly, a collegial atmosphere. We are part of the Grant MacEwan University family, but are a unique entity, operating within its walls.

The Muttart Foundation

In addition to the support of the college, the RCVO receives significant financial support for our programming from The Muttart Foundation in Edmonton. This generous grant is central to our ongoing viability as it provides us with base funding for operational expenses, essential staffing needs and our core resource collection.

TransCanada Pipelines

A significant, targeted, multi-year grant from TransCanada Pipelines is being directed toward cataloguing the approximately 6,000 articles in our resource collection and adding them to an on-line database that will be accessible on the RCVO website. The support of both TransCanada Pipelines and The Muttart Foundation is also responsible for our ability to offer additional services throughout the province via our RCVO On the Road program.

Other Funders

The Muttart Foundation and TransCanada Pipelines are two of the many generous organizations that have supported the RCVO since its inception. Others include:

  • The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy,

  • The Clifford E. Lee Foundation,

  • The Edmonton Community Foundation,

  • The Flora Trust,

  • The Junior League of Edmonton, and

  • The Wild Rose Foundation.
